In the search for the 'fountain of youth' science and experimentation continues to progress to the goal of an ageless skin. In fact, of our many organ systems, it seems that the skin is one of the few body systems that actually can be 'turned around' age wise. But this may not be true. Idebenone

According to the manufacturer Allergan™, the 'newest' and most effective chemical to be added to creams is idebenone. According to the manufacturer of Prevage™, it is the only cream to contain 1% of the compound idebenone, Prevage™ not only rejuvenates, but it also protects.

While at the 2005 'South Beach Symposium', a 2004 study was presented. Using very sophisticated biological methods, it was shown that idebenone as an topical skin agent, is significantly more active in decreasing cell damage. idebenone was compared to agents such as kinetin, vitamin C, Vitamin E, Hydroxy acids, ALA, and so forth.

General information

Contains idebenone, claimed by the manufacturer in 2005 to be the most potent antioxidant available in a topical skin care product.(1) Idebenone has been proven, scientifically proven, to be more effective than other topical antioxidants (kinetin, coenzyme Q10, lipoic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin E) in protecting against environmental stressors known to cause skin aging. It has been clinically proven to reduce the signs of skin aging in usually 6 weeks.2

Scientific Evidence

Data that compare leading antioxidants show that idebenone is the most effective topical antioxidant product available.(1) A six-week clinical study evaluated the use of Prevage™ antioxidant cream containing a 1 percent concentration of idebenone in 21 women between the ages of 18 and 65 with moderate photoaging (dry facial skin and fine lines/wrinkles). The women in the study applied Prevage™ antioxidant cream twice a day to the facial area for six weeks. Study results included:

29 percent reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles;

26 percent reduction in skin roughness or dryness;

37 percent increase in skin hydration; and,

33 percent overall global improvement in the appearance of skin.(2)

Idebenone information .

About Idebenone

When compared to other commonly known topical antioxidants available in skincare products, idebenone is the most potent and effective antioxidant compound. Idebenone has been found to be effective in protecting the skin against key environmental stressors known to cause fine lines and wrinkles including: ultraviolet radiation, ozone, air pollution and cigarette smoke. It also was ranked the most effective compound tested in a series of biochemical and cell-biological methods used to determine the effectiveness of antioxidant compounds at preventing biological damage as a result of oxidative stress.(1)

A close relative of the compound Co-Enzyme Q10, idebenone has far greater skin penetration potential and a much higher oxidative stress protection capacity.(1) Its lower molecular weight allows for greater skin penetration and extended shelf life stability.

 

A History of Idebenone - the brain

For idebenone, the active ingredient in the skin cream Prevage™, the fountain of youth began with the treatment of the brain and not the skin. Idebenone is an analog of CoQ10. Takeda Chemical Industries of Japan has been marketing Idebenone in Japan, under the trade name Avan since 1986. The compound was expensive and available only in Japan for some time. Prior to 1990, the majority of the world literature on Idebenone had been published in Japanese-largely unavailable to scientists in the West. Zs.-Nagy, through his contacts in the Japanese research community, encouraged the translation of many of these studies, and was an active participant in much of the research. He published three special issues of his journal, each of which focused entirely on Idebenone.
The first two-May, 1989 and November/December, 1990-contained articles on the in vivo and in vitro effects of Idebenone on experimental animals.9,10 Zs.-Nagy himself authored or co-authored twelve of the articles.
While in Italy at the Laboratory for Experimental Gerontology, Zs.-Nagy encouraged his colleagues there to investigate the clinical effects of Idebenone. These studies resulted in his third special issue, which was devoted exclusively to human clinical trials.11
Idebenone's numerous benefits were attributed to its antioxidant properties and protective effect against damage to mitochondrial membranes. This results in enhanced formation of ATP (the body's principal energy molecule), increased glucose metabolism, and reduced tissue oxygen requirements. These properties are the basis for Idebenone's powerful effects on cellular energy metabolism and utilization.

A Word of Caution

There are many examples in our societity where newer agents are used for 'new applications'. No one knows of the absolute benefits and risks of what can happen with the application of skin care products. This site presents to you what is thought to be today (2005), reasonable products for skin care use. There may be a small chance that in your particular case, a 'problem' could occur. The most common problem might be local irritation from the product or one of its components. A more remote possibility might be that there is something that in your particular case is harmful to your 'system'. While the chances are small that this would be of significance, please be aware of same. To my knowledge as of this time there have been no problems associated with the use of idebenone for skin care, except for local irritations and reactions to the topical agents.
