Annual Meeting

This October 99, I attended the meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, of which I am a member. Our annual meeting is held to highlight the 'new' or relatively 'new' happenings in our specialty of plastic surgery. One of the 'new 'developments which I had particular interest, was 'microdermabrasion'.

Actually microdermabrasion was developed in Italy about eight years ago. It has been used in Europe since then. It is relatively new in the United States. After careful researching various machines (there are more than twenty microdermabrasion machines), I decided to purchase the original machine that was developed in Florence Italy.

It continues to be made in Florence and the hand abrasion pieces are individually fashioned of hand blown glass. Its features were that of reliability and sterility. For these reasons and others, I purchased the Florentine machine. This microdermabrasion machine has a slightly higher cost for materials but all crystals are sterile and packaged in sterile, closed containers. There is essentially no chance of infection either during or after use. The hand piece that touches the skin is also sterilized.

The technology of microdermabrasion uses a vacuum and a pump to send crystals of corundum crystals (aluminum oxide) through a tube. Corundum crystals are apparently second on the hardness scale to diamonds. As the hand piece is placed against the skin, the crystal brush against the skin, the outer layers of the skin are removed. The effects of this are very controlled, and in some instances, vigorous abrasion softens the skin. Areas of increased pigment are removed in part. The skin is clarified. Blood flow is enhanced. The skin over time develops more collagen, which gives the skin a better texture. The deeper layers of the skin are stimulated to produce skin that is of better quality. Because of the control that is available in removing the outer layers of the skin, the eventual effect of adequate treatments is also tightening of the skin and decreasing wrinkles.

The features of the machine make it a powerful tool for other conditions. Acne and acne scars, surgical scars, chicken pox scars, etc. can be treated.

One of the most exciting treatments is that of stretch marks. Sunspots can be improved or removed along with 'old age spots'. Large pores especially on the nose or cheek folds can be improved.

Pictures of improvement are available for your perusal. Over the past two years, there has been a tremendous growth in the popularity of 'The lunch time peel ', as it is called.

Usually four to five treatments are recommended for conditions that are not severe. Treatments are at one to two week intervals depending on your skin type. Makeup can normally be applied right after treatment. 'Down time' is minimal. Most of our staff has had treatments and would be happy to discuss the treatments with you. Thank you
